at the paris climate conference in december 2015, 196 countries adopted a global, legally binding treaty to limit global warming (paris agreement, entered into force on 4 november 2016). the main goals of which were to combat climate change and reduce emissions in order to keep global average temperatures to well below 2, preferably to 1.5 degrees celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels.
